Abisko -- Alpine Flower

PRELUDE
It's not easy being a mountain flower. She only has time to flower during the short summer, then she has to survive a harsh winter. That's why mountain plants have developed different strategies for survival. One strategy is interdependence or symbiosis, such as the relation between the globalflower and the fly. If you open up a globeflower you might find a small fly inside. On sunny days, the flower fly might even be sitting on top of the flower. They are completely dependent on each other.

The story of flower and fly reminds me of a poem by a Japanese poet.

生命は　

吉野 弘

　　自分自身で完結できないように　
　　つくられているらしい
　　花も
　　めしべとおしべが揃っているだけでは
　　不充分で　
　　虫や風が訪れて　
　　めしべとおしべを仲立ちする
　　
　　生命はすべて
　　そのなかに欠如を抱きけ
　　それを他者から満たしてもらうのだ
　　
　　世界は多分
　　他者の総和　
　　しかし
　　互いに　
　　欠如を満たすなどとは
　　知りもせず
　　知らされもせず
　　ばらまかれている者同士
　　無関心でいられる間柄
　　
　　ときに
　　うとましく思えることさも許されている間柄
　　そのように
　　世界がゆるやかに構成されているのは
　　なぜ？
　　
　　花が咲いている
　　すぐ近くまで
　　虻の姿をした他者が
　　光りをまとって飛んできている
　　
　　私も　あるとき
　　誰かのための虻だったろう
　　
　　あなたも　あるとき
　　私のための風だったかもしれない



Life (in translation)

It seems life is constructed in a way

that no one can fulfill it alone

Just as it's not enough for flower to have pistils and stamens

An insect or breeze must introduce a pistil to a stamen

Life contains its own absence,

which only

an Other can fulfill

It seems the world is

the summation of Others

And yet,

We neither know

nor are told that

we will fulfill each other

We lead our scattered lives,

perfectly unaware of each other...

Or at times,

allowed to find the Others's presence

disagreeable

Why is it,

that the world is constructed

so loosely?

A horse fly,

bathed in light,

flies in close to a blooming flower

I, too,

might have been someone's horse fly

Perhabs you, too,

had once been my breeze

生命 可能是
　　無法以自身之力成功的完滿
　　而被創造出來的
　　好比花
　　就算將雌蕊與雄蕊聚集
　　也不足夠
　　仍需昆蟲與微風的造訪
　　連繫起雌蕊與雄蕊的關係
　　
　　生命本質上
　　便懷有重要的匱缺
　　並從他者的存在而完滿
　　
　　世界　或許是
　　所有他者的總合
　　然而
　　我們彼此
　　對於自身這份重要的匱缺
　　毫無自覺
　　也未曾被告知
　　原來　我們是這樣被播散的種子
　　總是冷淡的距離
　　然而有時
　　再難忍卻也能維持住的關係
　　就這樣
　　世界被巧妙的構築了
　　何故?
　　
　　花盛開著
　　近身一看
　　便發現像馬蠅這樣他者的存在
　　在光線的纏繞中飛舞著
　　
　　曾幾何時 我也
　　成為誰的馬蠅吧？
　　
　　曾幾何時 你也是
　　得以完滿我的那微風吧？
