Charleston Requiem

I didn't realize that Charleston could be some place until I started to book flight ticket and hotel. Gee... what a price! I immediately realized that I made a mistake and I should have stayed there longer.

Charleston is a historical town. I booked an B&B which has a history of almost two hundred years. Diane, who inherited the house from her grandparents, is an quite old-fashioned lady. I was directed to her by chance when almost all B&Bs I can find online had no vacancy for my two-day stay. Her house is not listed in Internet, -- what a disadvantage in such a technology world. She also didn't take credit card; rather she asked me to mail a check. Before my trip, she sent me a long email (thanks God! She at least have an email) -- with a highlighted sentence of "No shoes in the room. Please prepare your own slippery." Yet upon my arrival, I was amazed by her little jewel! Inside the room are various old furniture collected allover the country, most from Diane's relatives. (See the central photo) I immediately felt at home, even more when I bathed in the old-old bathtub with lion claws!

My  two-day agenda was quite full, so I decided to get up early far before the conference started. It was such a beautiful morning with lovely houses along the roads leading to the harbor. I stood under the window or in front of the garden gate, contemplating the life of those I never met...
